I have always loved art, both as an observer and as an artist, trying out different materials, subject matter and size of paintings.

Art was my favourite subject at high school and I remember promising faithfully to my art teacher to never stop experimenting with art, even though I would be relying on other skills to support me in my career and financially.

I have been fortunate to be able to play with a wide range of subjects on a large scale with the scene and set painting I have done for our local repertory society.  From Wind in the Willows meadow scenes, to decorating Toad’s gypsy caravan, a cemetery backdrop of Central Park and the New York skyline, cartoon-style scenes, no-man’s land for Blackadder Goes Forth, and the most recent, the Lost Boy’s forest for Peter Pan.  And all on such a giant scale, using house painting brushes, mixing my own colours, and getting the perspective right for a seated, live audience.

Then shifting to doing my own works in oils, acrylics, ink and pastels.  I love the process, stepping away from the day-to-day, experimenting, getting it just the way I want it to look, having the frustration of it not going as I thought, then working it back again.  Being focused on a subject matter and seeing where it takes me, the ideas that evolve from time spent in nature, around people and places.

I have also completed commissions, and have been thrilled to see the response when I reveal the finished painting, knowing it is appreciated and is going to a good home.

Art for me is a creative outlet, a joy, something I love to have around me, and to experience when I’m away from home.
